3 Kashmiri students, arrested for celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in the T20 World Cup, assaulted in Agra court


Three Kashmiri students, who were arrested for celebrating Pakistan’s 10-wicket victory over India in the ICC T20 World Cup, were assaulted in a court in Agra on Thursday.

In videos circulating on social media, a group of men are seen heckling students and shouting slogans as police attempt to escort them to a police vehicle. People can be heard chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Pakistan Murdabad” as they try to bypass the police and attack the youths.

For the uninformed, Arsheed Yousuf, Altaf Sheikh and Showkat Ahmed Ganai, engineering students at the Raja Balwant Singh Management Technical Campus in Agra, were arrested on Wednesday evening for allegedly sharing anti-Indian messages after Pakistan’s victory.

The three students were jailed after a leader of the BJP youth wing, Gaurav Rajawat, filed a complaint against them for allegedly “shouting pro-Pakistan slogans and sharing messages about it on social media.” after the loss of India.

The students were suspended from the hostel as well as from the institute.

According to the notice published by the dean of hostels, Dr Dushyant Singh, the students were found to be involved in “indiscipline” by “issuing a statute in favor of Pakistan” after the game on October 24.

“Therefore, the hostel’s disciplinary committee decided to suspend all three with immediate effect,” said a statement from the college.

The institute’s chief supervisor, Dr Ashish Shukla, said the three Kashmiri students apologized for their act.

The students had been admitted to the institute under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Program (PMSSS), which is available to students in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Meanwhile, a tweet from the office of the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh indicates that the students could also face charges of sedition.
