HYDERABAD: Mystery surrounds the death of a 16-year-old student staying at a Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) hostel in Gowlidoddi under Gachibowli Police Station, with a note allegedly written by the minor, saying that he was taking his own life because he was sexually abused, while the family disputes this version.

When the family staged a protest at the hostel, they were taken into protective custody to defuse the situation and were later released. The boy was continuing his second middle year and was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room.

Inspector Suresh of the Gachibowli circle said: “We suspect that sexual abuse was the motive for the boy’s suicide. The suicide note we found mentioned that he had taken the extreme measure because he was a victim of sexual abuse. However, he did not mention by whom.

However, the boy’s father said: “Although cell phones are not allowed inside the boarding schools, they organize phones on a certain day for students to contact their parents. His last call was on February 14 and he was completely normal when he spoke to us. When we asked him why he hadn’t called for a few days, he said he was busy with classes and studying. Everything seemed normal until we received the shocking news from hostel management today.”

He said that since the minor spoke normally, there was no need for him to make such an extreme gesture. “When we asked the hostel management this question, they called the police and we were put behind bars,” the boy’s father said.

However, Circle Inspector Suresh said, “The hostel management was slow to inform the family as they realized that tragedy only struck after they broke down the door to the room.” The officer said the students start their day at 4 a.m.

“When they noticed the door was locked from the inside, they assumed someone was sleeping too much. They tried to wake the person inside by knocking on the door and when there was no answer they were forced to break down the door. They transferred him to Osmania Hospital but he was pronounced dead,” Suresh said. The case is being investigated by Gachibowli Police.
