Best outdoor-focused hotels and hostels 2022
As soon as we hopped on our bikes for a ride at the base of Oregon’s Mount Bachelor last June, storm clouds moved overhead and rain began pouring between trees. The region’s coveted silt has turned to mush. If we had stayed in our RV with no heater or shower, I would have been less enthusiastic about getting soaked and covered in mud. But my husband and I were lucky. For this trip, we researched hotels that focused on the outdoors and booked a stay at Campfire Hotel, an outdoor RV in Bend, OR. This meant we could warm up and clean up after our ride. We navigated the berms, bends and bumps of the trail as silt and mud splattered over us, knowing that a hot shower awaited us when we returned.
We were in good company at Campfire. Other guests had also been caught in the storm, and they wore mud stains and smiles as big as ours. This is exactly what I love about outdoor-focused hotels, resorts, and hostels. They attract people who are just as keen on outdoor adventure as you are, and since these hotels often offer communal gathering places, you have plenty of opportunities to connect with like-minded people around the campfire or whatever. while relaxing in the hot tub. You might even make some new friends for the next day’s ride. When you book a stay at one of these unique properties, you become part of a larger community.
For this guide, I drew on my experience of staying at outdoor-focused hotels and talked to other travelers to learn more about the places they recommend. Below, I’ve compiled a list of seven of the best hotels, motels, and hostels that cater to outdoor travelers and also help them enjoy the wilderness.
