Evangel University to begin construction of new basketball arena

Evangel University announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday to begin construction of the Valor Center which will be the new home ground for its basketball programs in addition to a practice facility which will also house the basketball programs. football and soccer.

A ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. as part of the back-to-school celebration. The ceremony will take place in the northwest corner of campus near the Ashcroft Center, and the public is invited to attend.

The Valor Center, in addition to the Randy Rowden Training Center, are two major projects included in “Evangel’s Here. Now. Campaign,” which is a $24 million fundraising effort that launched last summer. Other projects include the complete renovation of the Walther Hall dormitory as well as the installation of a lighted artificial turf intramural pitch.

The university announced in mid-June that it had received a $10 million donation to launch the campaign. The donation was made by the Green family, owners of Hobby Lobby and Mardel Christian & Education stores.

When the Valor Center is built, the 70,000 square foot sports complex will house Evangel’s basketball, football and soccer programs.

The arena portion measures 40,000 square feet and will include a home playing field and two full cross-courts for practices and tournaments, a VIP lounge and dressing rooms in addition to gathering spaces, support and staffing offices. , changing rooms and meeting rooms. The reception capacity should be around 1,300 places.

The Randy Rowden Training Center will occupy the remaining 30,000 square feet on the south side of the Valor Center and will include VIP seating overlooking the north end area of ​​Coryell Field. The facility will house Evangel’s football and soccer programs, athletic director’s offices, and offices and operations. It will also include a weight room, sports medicine center and a 2,500 square foot multipurpose room for on-campus events and meetings.

The Valor Center’s south entrance plaza will serve as a student venue for pre- and post-game gatherings with additional site parking being developed near its north entrance.

The construction of the Valor Center, along with the renovation of the Walther Hall dormitory and new intramural field, represents the first major construction effort on the Evangel campus since the construction of the Ralph M. Riggs Administration Building in 2009.
