Gauteng hockey team members robbed at Gqeberha guesthouse
Gqeberha Police are looking for around six men who allegedly robbed young hockey players from a guesthouse in Beverley Grove in the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to the spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu, according to reports, it is alleged that some of the hockey players retired to their rooms on Saturday evening, and shortly after midnight two girls sharing a room were awakened by three unknown persons in the room.
She says one had a gun and the other two had knives.
Their hands were tied and the room ransacked.
Colonel Naidu says that soon after, two other teenagers were ushered into the room and also tied up.
She says the suspects were surprised by the team leader and other players who had entered the guest house through the sliding door and they fled with clothes, cell phones, SIM cards, laptops, a Wi-Fi router, an iPad and cash.
No shots were fired and no one was injured. were taken.
The team is from Gauteng.
A case of corporate theft is being investigated.
The girls involved were from the South Gauteng and North Gauteng Under-21 hockey teams who were in Gqeberha for the South Africa Under-21 Interprovincial Hockey.
The tournament ended on Saturday afternoon at the Gelvandale Astro where the Northern Blues beat Southern Gauteng in a penalty shootout in the final.
Algoa FM News understands that some of the girls had gone out to celebrate and witnessed the robbery upon their return to their accommodation.
The men’s under-21 final saw South Gauteng beat the Northern Blues 3-1.
