GOP infighting is getting more and more ugly

House Republicans can’t seem to stop fighting each other, despite being potentially less than a year away from winning a majority in the 2022 midterm election.

McCarthy, the frontrunner to be the next president if the GOP reclaims the House next year, said his conference should instead focus on their opposition to social spending and the Democrats’ climate agenda.

Weeks later, conservative and ultra-conservative lawmakers are once again making headlines with schoolyard slurs on Twitter.

If McCarthy becomes president, infighting offers a glimpse into the difficulty of his job – and the difficulty a divided House GOP might have in governing. The narrower the margin, the more difficult McCarthy’s job would likely be.

McCarthy tends to prefer trying to iron out the issues behind the scenes at his conference; he does not like to publicly condemn his fellow GOP lawmakers, which also risks alienating them and their allies.

The next president will be chosen in part by an internal conference vote by the party that obtains the majority.

Amid the Twitter exchanges with Greene, Mace said she spoke with McCarthy on Tuesday and discussed “solving problems not just at the conference, but for our country.”

McCarthy has had a number of one-on-one calls.

He also phoned Boebert last week after a video showed her remembering her reaction to seeing Omar as he was getting on a Capitol elevator: “Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. . We should be fine. Boebert added, “Oh look, the ‘jihad squad’ decided to report to work today. ”

And in an attempt to further settle the Boebert controversy, McCarthy called on the House majority leader Steny HoyerSteny Hamilton HoyerOmar and Muslim Democrats speak out against Islamophobia amid death threats. (D-Md.) To help him coordinate a direct conversation between Boebert and Omar, although the second-tier Democrat said on Tuesday he warned McCarthy he didn’t think it would be “productive.”

McCarthy’s behind-the-scenes strategy has had its limits, as GOP lawmakers he has advised have on several occasions either doubled down on internal struggles or remained unrepentant.

Gosar ultimately deleted the violent anime video from Twitter, but later described it as having “self-censored”. In the end, that wasn’t enough to stop House Democrats, as well as Kinzinger and Rep. And hours after tweeting that she had a “good call” with McCarthy, Mace launched further Twitter attacks against Greene by calling her “bonkers” – with another emoji – and adding that she was “at the – beyond disgust “.

“Marjorie Taylor Greene is a liar. And I’m not going to tolerate lies, racism or bigotry, whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, ”Mace added in an interview Tuesday on Neil Cavuto’s Fox Business. “She’s crazy. She’s crazy. She’s bad for the party. And I’m not going to take it.

Boebert initially apologized “to anyone in the Muslim community whom I have offended with my comment on Representative Omar.” But when Boebert and Omar connected by phone on Monday, the two lawmakers confirmed that it had deteriorated quickly.

In an Instagram video recapping the conversation, Boebert again invoked an anti-Muslim trope by saying, “Make no mistake, I will continue to put America first, never sympathizing with terrorists.” Unfortunately, Ilhan cannot say the same.

“Well, I think when you’re in a leadership position you have to stand up. You have to take care of it. I appreciate that Kevin called our colleague directly to discuss the matter with her. But at some point, you also have to get up and just call him out for what he is. This type of rhetoric cannot be tolerated. This cannot be confirmed, ”Reed told CNN.

Yet alienating far-right members closely linked to Trump also carries risks for McCarthy.

Greene claimed in an episode of Rep. This resulted in Trump’s regular attacks on McConnell, who tended not to retaliate. Trump called McConnell an “old crow” and said he has “been beaten on all fronts by radical left Democrats” since agreeing to a temporary extension of the debt limit in October.

Greene touted his ties to Trump on Tuesday, tweeting that she had had a “great conversation” with him about Mace.

“Don’t look now, but it’s MTG unable to take the heat, running towards the [principal]office to tell because she can’t stand on her own, ”Mace replied. “Bless his heart. “
