IIT Madras student sexual assault on campus, students want worker entry restrictions

The students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have asked the management not to allow laborers and laborers in student areas including hostels and campuses at night. The request came after an employee of a juice shop on the campus of IIT Madras, Chandan Kumar (20), was arrested by police for attacking a female student on the campus of the first institute .

An IIT-Madras student filed an email complaint with the institute authorities on July 26 stating that her friend was assaulted on campus on July 24 and the victim was not interested in filing a complaint. complaint to the police.

The student said the victim was cycling back to the hostel when a man grabbed her inside campus and she fell. The man attempted to sexually assault her, but she fought back and fled to the hostel with a broken bicycle.

The complainant said: “It was pure luck that my friend managed to escape the attack, which could have ended in a much worse situation. She returned to the inn, shaken and bleeding. It was horrible to hear about the incident and the rest of the students no longer felt safe.

The management of the IIT-M had organized an identity parade of around 300 people, including workers. During the parade on Tuesday, the student identified the culprit, and immediately the authorities of IIT-Madras informed the police.

Police took Chandan Kumar from Bihar into custody and arrested him under IPC Section 354 (criminal assault or force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and the Section 4 of the TN Harassment of Women Act (anyone who harasses women on the premises of an educational institution).

IIT-M will hold a meeting of students and faculty to decide whether to increase security within the campus for female students and increase the security personnel on duty on campus.
