While Biden, 79, has expressed his intention to run for a second term in 2024, some Democratic strategists doubt that will happen, given his age and declining popularity, which has been compounded by a devastating electoral loss for the Virginia Democrats which was interpreted as a referendum on his presidency.

Harris is featured frequently in Democratic circles as a possible successor to Biden’s presidency, but his missteps throughout the year and declining approval ratings have raised concerns. A Fox News survey last month found that 45% of registered voters approved of Harris’ performance as vice president and 53% disapproved.
A lengthy CNN article recently described mutual exasperation between Harris and Biden’s offices as the vice president’s approval rating drops, with the premiere’s assistants feeling dry as she tackles thankless jobs without White House coverage, and White House staff having “raised their hands in the air” to their “lack of focus,” as CNN put it.
Harris’ public appearances were marked by unforced errors and uncomfortable moments, some caused by the vice president and others by her entourage.
