Maharashtra announces tax exemption for all caravans and motorhomes, details here

The Department of Transport has decided to grant exemption from payment of tax imposed under the Motor Vehicle Tax Act of Maharashtra (LXV of 1958) to all caravans or motorhomes, registered as as tourist entities under the units of the Directorate of Tourism (DoT). With this step comes the vision of the immense reach of caravan tourism in the state, a statement said.

The Maharashtra government had approved the caravan tourism policy on March 15, 2021. After that, the decision to waive the tax for caravans or motorhomes was under consideration. On July 27, 2021, the Vehicle Transport Department of the Government of Maharashtra amended the government notification and decided to waive taxes imposed on caravans or motorhomes, registered under the policy.

Every year, medium sized caravans or motorhomes pay a tax of Rs 5,500 per square meter to the state government. The tax amount for larger vans was around Rs 1.4 lakhs. Hence, this initiative by Maharashtra Tourism comes as a break during the hard times of COVID and aims to benefit all caravan and motorhome operators who have registered.

Dr Dhananjay Sawalkar, Jt. The director of the Tourism Directorate said: “The tax exemption for caravans is a big step forward in supporting operators. This will change the course of travel in Maharashtra and help establish a caravan ecosystem in the state. I would like to urge operators to come forward, to register to reap the benefits of the policy.

Motohom Caravan was the first caravan to come under Maharashtra’s caravan tourism policy. On the National Tourism Day on January 25, 2022. The Motohom caravan was flagged down by Minister of Tourism Aditya Thackeray and Minister of State for Tourism Aditi Tatkare at Sahyadri Guest House, Mumbai.
