NHPC to develop green hydrogen-based microgrid and public transport in Leh and Kargil
In order to reduce the carbon footprint in the power sector, NHPC has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) for the development of “Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies” in Leh and Kargil districts of the Union Territory from Ladakh.
In accordance with the signed MoU for Leh district, NHPC will develop a pilot micro-grid based on green hydrogen fuel cell, including hydrogen generation, to meet the energy needs of the guesthouse NHPC at Nimmo Bazgo Power Plant (Leh) at NHPC premises.
And according to the memorandum of understanding signed for the Kargil district, the hydrogen generated in Kargil will be used in fuel cells for mobility, capable of operating two buses for up to eight hours in the Kargil region.
“NHPC will scale up hydrogen production on a commercial scale to meet the hydrogen needs of the Ladakh region in different sectors such as mobility, transport, heating and micro-grids and the subsequent MoU will be signed separately,” the Department of Energy said.
“These two pilot projects will create a roadmap for the future development of green hydrogen and the subsequent reduction of carbon emissions in the transport / heating sector and will also attract long-term investments in the hydrogen economy. , creating different sources of income and job opportunities for the youth of UT Ladakh,” he added.
