WATERLOO – A two-story single-family home at 1414 Commercial St. caught fire Sunday morning.
One person inside escaped unharmed when Waterloo firefighters arrived on the scene around 6:45 a.m. and received Red Cross assistance, Capt Bill Harter said.
“The house is a total loss,” Harter said. “We’ll have to go down.”

The workers were boarding the house on Sunday afternoon.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
It’s unclear exactly how long the house had been burning, but by the time firefighters arrived there was no chance of saving it, Harter said.
After determining no one else was inside, Harter said, the focus shifted to extinguishing the fire and protecting the nearby house, just a few steps west at 1412 Commercial St.
